I couldn’t let August get away from me without blogging this boho bridal session I shot of my sister at the beginning of the month.
This session has to be one of my favorites to date for a plethora of reasons:
1. My sister is a BABE.
2. This shoot was purely for fun/inspiration. No stress; just us wandering around Saratoga Springs with the most gorgeous sun set.
3. I finally got to photograph a Reclamation Dress!!!!
4. MOUNTAINS, GANDALF!
5. It just goes to show that you don’t need a $3K budget for a wedding dress.
Before I flew out to SLC, I told Katy that I was renting this gorgeous dress that was seemingly made for the northern Utah landscape. She begrudgingly agreed to be my muse, but said time and time over that the boho vibe isn’t really her aesthetic. Then she put the dress on and BOOM. Model mode activated. Even her hubby Chase was like, “Dammmmmnnnnnnn” and offered to come along to the shoot, just to be able to check out his wife. I would look up from my camera every few minutes, and he’s just off to the side staring. It was adorable, y’all.
The evening of the shoot didn’t exactly go according to plan. I was expecting this gorgeous sunset over the mountains, but about 2 hours before we were going to start shooting, this HUGE rain cloud came over Saratoga Springs and just kinda hovered. It started to rain over the mountains in the distance, so we quickly booked it to Smith’s and picked up a bunch of sunflowers and a hat that we found on clearance. We lucked out on the lack of rain where we were shooting and the skies #BLESSED us with such a stunning evening. The temperature cooled down, the skies turned a lovely shade of pink, and everything was so beautiful that I literally cried before we finished. This shoot made my life better. It helped me push my creative limits and try a few new things. And mountains. My favorite things.
Scroll through to view my goddess of a big sis and at the end, I’ll tell you how you can get your hands on your very own Reclamation dress.
Obsessed? Me too. And the fun part is that you can RENT these dresses! This one cost a little less than $100 for a whole week of use. If you check out Trista’s website, you’ll see a ton of other glorious styles of dress, all made by hand. Not only can you rent through her shop, but there’s a photography project called the Traveling Dress Project where local photographers rent out their dresses for other photographers or brides to use. The dresses themselves are super versatile and flattering on every body type. Katy is about 5’6″, average height and bust for her size. The dress clearly was WORKING for her. I tried it on myself (for science) and was also super impressed at how gorgeous it was, even on my 5’0″ self (who is a little more blessed in the chest–thanks, childbirth). You know the scene in “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Dress” where all the girls are trying on these magic jeans? Yeah, it was exactly like that.
